Come on, sailor.

By in Design, Personal

I have always loved nautical spaces. From the funky Red Lobster in Odessa when I was a small child to the old ships in San Francisco, my dreams of sailing upon the ocean blue in search of something much bigger than me alone, have never left. I remember visiting the Cayman Islands when I was young, always wanting to be in the water, forever fascinated by the boats. I have vivid memories of a catamaran one summer and how I decided that I would never leave that boat, making it my very own. Just me, the ocean, and my fancy catamaran. Perhaps even my love of The Ladies Man stems from my affinity for the open sea, for Tim Meadows lived upon a houseboat in the movie.

I am often inspired by nautical themed interior spaces as well. It does not have to be the ocean, as long as it reminds me of the ocean, you see. When Jason and I put together our bedroom, I was set on navy blue and white. We compromised a bit and, of course, have many items reflecting each of our own personal tastes. However, in my mind, if it’s a bedroom, it must contain blues and whites. Both soothing and nature inspired, these colors also transport me to a time and place when I thought anything was possible. As long as you had an open sea and vessel to travel, I found the world to be limitless. I still like to imagine that the world is truly this way. Everything can be an adventure, if you approach it as such. Each moment is a learning experience. And an eye patch goes with everything.
